VERB & KINDS OF VERB WITH EXAMPLES
A verb is one of the main parts of a sentence. In fact, you can’t have a sentence or a question without a verb! That’s how important these “action” parts of speech are. The verb indicates an occurrence, an action or a state of being. Whether physical, mechanical or mental, verbs always express activity. See Adverb and it’s kinds.
Types of Verb
There are three types of the Verb.
- Action verbs
- Linking verbs
- Auxiliary verbs
Action Verb
Action verbs can be transitive and can be intransitive.
Transitive Verb
The verb which needs an object to make a full meaning in a sentence is called a TRANSITIVE VERB. It’s also a principle verb.
Examples
- I play cricket
- They eat chocolate
Intransitive Verb
It’s also a principal verb. But it does not need an object to make a full meaning in a sentence is INTRANSITIVE VERB.
Examples
- she goes to school
- They sit on the chair
Linking verbs
Linking verbs are those which do not show any action like transitive or intransitive verbs but they link the verb with the subject, And these verbs do not perform any physical actions.
Examples
- she looks at me
- We smell the flowers
- They hear you
- They sit on the chair
Auxiliary verbs
Auxiliary verbs are those which are not actually the main verbs. e.g: Is, am, are.
Example
- I am working Here
- She is cooking food
